NELSON TRIP
Reporters:- Naida & Bryan
On Monday
31 October 2011, the 67 members of all the different Christchurch U3As were
welcomed into the homes of their Nelson billeters (homestay hosts), a small
proportion of the guests opted to find their own accommodation. Next morning we participated in various
interesting discussion groups which we had chosen some time before, from a comprehensive itinerary.
At noon we were hosted to a sumptuous
finger food luncheon provided by the U3A Nelson members in the large hall in
the Founders/Settlers Museum compound decorated with red and black balloons and
large travel banners. One was a “Welcome to Christchurch” showing the Cathedral in its pre-quake prime!
Nelson speakers, including the deputy Mayor, became very emotional as some were ex Christchurch
people who had recently been down to the city and were shocked by the non-existence of many
landmark buildings and damage to their old schools.
After the
luncheon, we joined various groups, many attending an interesting talk and
tour of a huge hydroponic/organic tomato and capsicum farm, mostly under huge
glasshouses. This farm provides produce
to a wide area of NZ. Others went to the "World of Wearable Arts", or other interesting venues.
In the evening
many participated in a Quiz and Pizza night at a local tavern. This "Trivia" style event was a great fun night and a chance to
meet socially many more of the Nelson U3A people.
Wednesday
offered two bus trips – we spent time at a huge Christmas gift, hand craft sales, jewelery and Pretzell establishment
(Eyecare) just out of Richmond,
moving on to the Hoglund art glass works afterwards. Our next stop, after traveling through the Waimea Plains with an informative and homourously good commentary from the driver, arriving at Mapua for a quick lunch and discounted shopping. After lunch we headed back to the
Waimea Winery for wine tasting, after tea and more discounted purchases!!
That evening a ”beer tasting
and tapas” event was offered where we were treated to a talk about and a taste of various Nelson boutique beers, accompanied by Mexican style nibbles and local cheeses.
Thursday
for both morning and afternoon sessions we went to pre-chosen activities – discussion
groups varying from “The Ascent of Man”, "Choreography of Modern Ballet” ,“ The
Great Discontinuity” and others.
Some chose an organised walk through the
city hosted by the Nelson City Council.
They were shown land marks, old
sea areas and other places in Nelson of interest. An alternative option was a tour
through the Cathedral and then a talk on how an organ is constructed and how
they obtain the various sounds which was played by the organ master.
This fantastic three days ended with a "Red and Black" dinner at The Anchor Bar and Grill on the marina waterfront.
The hospitality,
organisation and brain stretching groups were superb – this was organised to
offer Christchurch
people a rest away from aftershocks and it was certainly a great break - restful even though a busy schedule of events.
The U3A Nelson group of 150 members were terrific hosts, even providing home
baked morning and afternoon teas for all the groups. Words cannot express our gratitude for their
hospitality, generosity and empathy – their organisation would match any paid business seminars
